Demartravion ‘Trey’ Reed found dead in university campus
University police on Monday morning at around 7:05 a.m. found the dead body of Reed hanging from a tree near the pickleball courts. The discovery unsurprisingly shocked the Cleveland, Mississippi, campus and swiftly prompted an immediate police response. Delta State Police Chief Michael L. Peeler later confirmed that initial observations showed no signs of foul play, but speculations remain with investigations underway. Notably, the tragedy took place just as Delta State prepared to celebrate its 100th anniversary. Instead, the university suspended all events and classes for the day in memory of Reed.
Cause of death
As of now, Chief Peeler said that investigators suspect Reed’s death was a suicide, although the Bolivar County coroner has not yet issued an official cause of death. While authorities are considering self-harm as the cause, there is still speculation of foul play after a graphic video of Reed’s body started circulating on social media. The viral footage sparked all kinds of rumors related to foul play, particularly after a TikTok user claiming to be Reed’s cousin alleged that Reed had signs of suffering various injuries, suggesting violence. Following the news about his tragic death, tributes and condolences have come pouring in, with Delta State University releasing a statement extending their condolences to Reed’s family. The statement also announced that counselors and support services were available to students, faculty, and staff. The university further added:

Meanwhile, on Facebook, a family member posted:
“On behalf of my family, I ask that you please not share the very graphic video of Trey. For some of you it’s information, entertainment even, but for us it’s a living nightmare.”
