Catherine M. Engelbert is the commissioner of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), who was born on November 14, 1964, in Collingswood, New Jersey, USA. She grew up in a sports-loving family and developed leadership qualities from an early age. She was born to Kurt, who worked as an IT manager, and his wife, who managed a medical practice. Cathy is one of eight siblings, and she has five brothers and two sisters.
Although her religion isn’t known, the Engelbert name is of Germanic origin, derived from the Old High German words “angil” meaning “angel” and “bert” meaning “bright” or “famous” which means she could be Christian.

She started her professional journey at Deloitte in 1986, where she climbed the corporate ladder and eventually became a partner in 1998 after spending over three decades at the company.

She went on to take multiple leadership roles, including serving on the board and key committees. Later in 2015, she made history by becoming the first female CEO of Deloitte, also becoming the first woman to lead a Big Four firm in the U.S. Four years later, in May 2019, Cathy became the first commissioner of the WNBA, officially beginning the role on July 17, 2019. Besides her corporate and WNBA roles, Cathy has also served on several prestigious boards, including McDonald’s, Royalty Pharma, Catalyst, and the U.S. Golf Association’s executive committee.
