The 22-year-old suspect recently appeared virtually, just days after his arrest, as prosecutors confirmed they will pursue the death penalty.

Judge Tony Graf is presiding over the Tyler Robinson case and led the initial court appearance via a virtual session at 3:00 PM MDT on September 16, 2025. He formally read the charges, which included aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, and obstruction of justice. Graf also confirmed that Robinson’s case will move forward later this month, with another virtual hearing scheduled for September 29.

Tony Graf earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law. Before that, Tony completed his bachelor’s degree at Weber State University.
Law career
Tony Graf has so far had a successful law career, including significant prosecutorial and judicial roles. He started as a Deputy County Attorney at the Davis County Attorney’s Office and later worked at both the Utah County Attorney’s Office and later at the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office. Aside from the courtroom, Tony also volunteered as Judge Pro Tempore for the Salt Lake City Justice Court and served on the Utah Supreme Court Advisory Committee on the Rules of Evidence. Tony Graf also notably contributes as a faculty member for statewide prosecutor trainings, and he has previously presented at multiple legal and child advocacy conferences.
