Hariom Valmiki lynched to death

A 38-year-old Dalit man from Fatehpur called Hariom Valmiki was brutally beaten to death after villagers falsely accused him of theft on October 2, in the Unchahar police station area. Hariom was reportedly traveling to meet his wife, who works at a nearby bank, when he was confronted. However, due to his mild mental illness, he struggled to answer villagers’ questions, and villagers soon branded him as a thief following paranoia over recent theft rumors and alleged drone sightings. The mob dragged Hariom to a canal and stripped him, before tying him to a pole and beating him mercilessly with sticks and belts through the night. One viral video shows Hariom shouting Rahul Gandhi’s name while the mob taunted:

“Hum toh baba wale hain.”

Hariom died on the spot from his injuries, and the villagers simply dumped his half-n*ked body near Ishwardaspur Railway Halt. Locals found his body the next morning, and a postmortem confirmed blunt force trauma as the official cause of death. Political leaders, including Chandrashekhar Azad, have since slammed the administration for negligence and caste bias.

SHO removed and five accused under Judicial Custody

The viral video forced immediate police action, and authorities have since managed to arrest five men—Vaibhav Singh, Vipin Maurya (alias Anuj Maurya), Vijay Kumar, Sahdev, and Suresh Kumar. Authorities placed all five men who belong to Dandepur Jamunapur village in judicial custody. Meanwhile, Unchahar SHO Sanjay Kumar was removed from his post for negligence, and three policemen were also suspended.
