The attack comes amid a surge in anti-Semitic incidents across the UK, with the Community Security Trust (CST) recording 3,528 incidents in 2024.

Manchester Synagogue Attack

The fatal attack took place just after 9:30 a.m. as worshippers gathered for Yom Kippur services. According to eyewitness reports, the attacker used his car to ram into pedestrians on the street near the synagogue. He then went on a six-minute stabbing rampage, with the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) declaring a major incident at 9:37 a.m., before launching Operation Plato.

As authorities reported the attack, armed officers shot the attacker at 9:38 a.m. Paramedics then treated four injured victims on the scene and transported the critically wounded to nearby hospitals. Bomb disposal teams also arrived on the scene after the suspect was found wearing a vest resembling an explosive device. The attack seemingly led to the death of two victims by 11:15 a.m., while three others currently remain in critical condition.

Manchester Synagogue Attack: attacker and victims

Police have identified the attacker as 35-year-old Jihad al-Shamie, who is a British citizen of Syrian heritage. Besides this, there is hardly any information available about him, with investigators still examining his motives. However, speculations suggest that the attack targeted Jewish worshippers during their most sacred religious day.

Jihad who is of Syrian descent and a Muslim by religion, came to the UK as a small child and was naturalised as a British citizen in the mid-2000s.

He lived in Langley Crescent, Prestwich with his family, including his mother, father and brothers who lived there for around 20 years. He is believed to be single and unmarried at the time of his death.

Shamie who had been living there since 2001 had initially lived with both parents and two brothers but his father moved out about six or seven years ago and returned in a car with a French number plate. Details about Jo

Faraj al-Shamie, his father, in a statement said the family wished to distance themselves from Thursday’s attack and wrote: “The news from Manchester regarding the terrorist attack targeting a Jewish synagogue has been a profound shock to us.

“The al-Shamie family in the UK and abroad strongly condemns this heinous act, which targeted peaceful, innocent civilians. We fully distance ourselves from this attack and express our deep shock and sorrow over what has happened.”

Faraj al-Shamie worked as a trauma surgeon for several non-governmental organisations in conflict zones including South Sudan.

Meanwhile, the victims who were killed were 53-year-old Adrian Daulby and 66-year-old Melvin Cravitz. Both of them were residents and members of the Jewish community. Three others also suffered severe injuries from both the vehicle ramming and stabbing. GMP have reportedly arrested two men in their 30s and a woman in her 60s on suspicion of preparing and instigating terrorist acts.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer speaks out

In response to the incident, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack and stated:

“Earlier today, on Yom Kippur, the holiest day for the Jewish community, a vile individual committed a terrorist attack that targeted Jews because they are Jews, and attacked Britain because of our values.”

He further added:

“We will do everything to keep our Jewish community safe.”
