Texas State University has expelled one of its students named Devion Canty Jr., after a viral video of him showed him mocking the death of Charlie Kirk. The incident drew attention even from Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who demanded that mocking an assassination “must have consequences.” Texas State University President Kelly Damphouse confirmed the disciplinary move and called Canty’s conduct “disturbing” and incompatible with university values.
In response, Canty has come out stating that he decided to withdraw voluntarily while citing safety concerns and pressure on the campus community. He has also argued that he was unfairly portrayed as “an out-of-control, disrespectful young Black man” despite not physically harming anyone.
