Matthew and Maria Raine have sued OpenAI and Sam Altman in the San Francisco Superior Court. In their lawsuit, the couple have accused them of negligence and wrongful death, stating that OpenAI designed ChatGPT to “continually encourage and validate” Adam’s self-destructive thoughts. Moreover, the parents claim that the chatbot never ended the conversation or contacted emergency services despite recognizing Adam’s suicide attempt and intention.
OpenAI has acknowledged the chat logs but clarified that ChatGPT’s safety features sometimes weaken during prolonged interactions. The Raine family is demanding tighter AI safeguards, including age verification and parental controls, in order to prevent future tragedies.
Lawyers for parents of Adam Raine say 16-year-old took his own life after months of encouragement from ChatGPT as over the months, the AI dragged Adam deeper and deeper, preying on his vulnerabilities and isolating him.
