Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan is a veteran politician who was born on May 4, 1957, in Tiruppur, Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu. He is widely known as C.P. Radhakrishnan and is currently 68 years old. Radhakrishnan belongs to a Hindu family, and he was born to C.K. Ponnusami and his wife, K. Janaki. He started out his political journey with Jan Sangh back in 1974 and soon became a vital member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu. Over the years, Radhakrishnan has held key positions within the party, including state secretary in 1996 and state president from 2004 to 2007.

CP Radhakrishnan’s mother Janaki Ammal said, “We named our son CP Radhakrishnan with the hope that he will become like former President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.”

Education

Radhakrishnan pursued and completed his Bachelor of Business Administration from V.O.C. College, Tuticorin, affiliated with Madurai University, in 1978. This academic foundation helped him shape a career spanning agriculture, social work, and industry.

Political career

C.P. Radhakrishnan started out his political journey with Jan Sangh back in 1974 when he was 17 and his influence grew steadily. After joining the Jan Sangh, he became a driving force in BJP’s expansion in Tamil Nadu. He then served as state secretary and later as state president before leading party workers and impactful campaigns. Radhakrishnan notably led a 93-day Rath Yatra, championing key social issues across the state.

He then briefly worked as a Member of Parliament for Coimbatore, serving on the Committee on Commerce, Committee on PSU, and Committee on Finance. Radhakrishnan also chaired the Coir Board from 2016 to 2020, strengthening BJP’s presence in Kerala, and took on various administrative roles. Back in 2023, C.P. Radhakrishnan became the Governor of Jharkhand, and in 2024, he was eventually appointed as the Governor of Maharashtra. Most recently, Radhakrishnan has been nominated as the NDA’s Vice-Presidential candidate for the upcoming September 2025 elections.

C.P. Radhakrishnan is married to his wife, R. Sumathi, who is a businesswoman, and the couple has a son and a daughter. He married his wife on 22 November, 1985.
