Sushila Karki Set to Step in as New Interim PM of Nepal
Following a four-hour virtual meeting, Nepal’s youth movement has unanimously selected Sushila Karki as the interim leader of Nepal. The movement has agreed that no politically affiliated young leader should currently assume the interim prime minister role. As a result, they selected her for her neutrality, civic stature, and lack of political ties. Karki has seemingly surpassed other top contenders, including Kathmandu mayor Balendra Shah.
Sushila Karki Biography and Age
Sushila Karki is a prominent judicial figure in Nepal and a former Chief Justice who was born on June 7, 1952, in Biratnagar, Nepal as the eldest of her siblings and is a Hindu by religion. She made history back in 2016, after being appointed as the country’s first female Chief Justice, serving from July 2016 to June 2017. Sushila has a zero tolerance for corruption and will now serve as Nepal’s interim PM. She is currently 73 years old.
In 2007, her family came to Kathmandu and her father who was a farmer got involved in politics and was a politician in Nepali Congress.

Education
Sushila Karki obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mahendra Morang Campus in Biratnagar in 1972. Following this, she completed her Master’s degree in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University in India in 1975. She later went on to obtain a Bachelor of Laws degree from Tribhuvan University, Nepal, in 1978.
Professional Career
Sushila Karki began practicing law in Biratnagar, Nepal, in 1979, and briefly worked as an assistant teacher at Mahendra Multiple Campus in Dharan, back in 1985. She then attained the title of Senior Advocate in 2007, and on January 22, 2009, she was appointed as an ad hoc justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal. She eventually became a Permanent Justice later that year, on November 18, 2010.
Karki then went on to serve as the Acting Chief Justice from April 13 to July 10, 2016, before officially becoming the Chief Justice of Nepal’s Supreme Court on July 11, 2016. With her appointment, Karki made history as the first female Chief Justice. However, her tenure was short-lived and came to an end on June 7, 2017, following an impeachment motion filed in Parliament. Aside from her judicial career, Sushila Karki has also authored a book on gender equality and actively participates in human rights and women’s judicial organizations.
Marriage and Children
Sushila Karki is married to Durga Prasad Subedi, who was a popular youth leader of the Nepali Congress. The pair first met while Sushila was studying at Banaras Hindu University, and they have several children together.
