Authorities eventually clarified that there was no evidence ever linking Mallinson to the shooting and that he was in Toronto at the time of the shooting.
The rumor escalated after a fake social media account impersonating a legitimate news source wrongly identified Mallinson as a registered Democrat from Utah. According to authorities, the gunman fired a single shot from the rooftop of the Losee Center, which is located about 200 yards from the event site. The attack reportedly happened just minutes into Kirk’s “American Comeback Tour” campus event and sparked chaos and immediate evacuation efforts.
Despite being rushed to Timpanogos Regional Hospital, Kirk died from his wounds. While authorities managed to briefly detain multiple individuals for questioning, they were subsequently released, and the FBI and Utah law enforcement are continuing an ongoing manhunt for the shooter.
