CJI Gavai explained that his comments in the Khajuraho temple idol restoration case were wrongly portrayed. He emphasized that he never disrespected any faith and noted his visits to multiple religious places across India. “Go and ask the deity himself,” he had remarked while dismissing the plea, calling it a publicity-driven litigation. He reiterated that the Archaeological Survey of India, not the court, held jurisdiction over such matters. Comparing the uproar to events in Nepal, he criticized the way social media amplifies issues disproportionately.

Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai is the current Chief Justice of India, who was born on 24 November 1960 in Amravati, Maharashtra. He was born into a Dalit Buddhist family with a strong legacy of public service. Bhushan’s father, Ramkrishna Suryabhan Gavai, was a well-known politician and social activist, while his mother, Kamala Gavai, was a homemaker. Gavai grew up in a socially conscious environment and developed an early sense of justice and equality. He has a brother named Rajendra Gavai, who pursued both medicine and politics, while his sister, named Kirti, focused on family life.

BR Gavai is currently 64 years old and stands at a height of approximately 5 feet 10 inches (178 cm).

Religion

Justice BR Gavai is a devout follower of Buddhism and made history as the first Buddhist Chief Justice of India. B.R. Gavai is the first Buddhist and second Dalit Chief Justice of India and become the first member of a Scheduled Caste CJI in nine years.

Education

BR Gavai studied at Nagpur University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, following which he obtained a degree in Bachelor of Legislative Law (LLB).

Career

BR Gavai started his legal journey in 1985 when he enrolled as an advocate and trained under Barrister Raja S. Bhonsale. He then started an independent practice at the Bombay High Court in 1987, focusing on constitutional and administrative law. Gavai then went on to serve as Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor at the Nagpur Bench in 1992. Following this, he later became Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor in 2000.

He soon gained a major advancement in his career when he was appointed an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in 2003 and then as a Permanent Judge in 2005. By 2019, Gavai was elevated to the Supreme Court of India, where he participated in landmark cases like the Prashant Bhushan contempt case, the demonetization verdict, and the Article 370 ruling. He attained his current role as the 52nd Chief Justice of India just earlier this year, in May 2025, making history as the first Buddhist to ever hold the position.

Relationship and marriage

Justice Gavai is married to Tejaswini Gavai, who has largely stayed away from the public spotlight. The couple generally maintain a very private but steady partnership, with Gavai often describing Tejaswini as his anchor throughout his demanding judicial career.

Children

Gavai and Tejaswini have one daughter together named Karishma Gavai, who generally prefers a low-key life away from politics and media.

Karishma Gavai works as an assistant professor in National Law University Nagpur.

Salary and net worth

As the Chief Justice of India, BR Gavai earns a monthly salary of ₹280,000 along with various other allowances. According to the most recent asset disclosures, Gavai owns movable assets worth around ₹1.2 crore, besides owning several immovable properties, including houses and agricultural land in Maharashtra, Mumbai, and New Delhi.
