Justice Jamshed Burjor Pardiwala has recently drawn criticism following a recent judgment related to the handling of stray dogs. The Supreme Court, under the directive issued by Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan, has mandated shelters for 5,000 dogs with sterilization and immunization facilities for the intent of public safety. In response, animal rights activists, rescuers, and leaders like Maneka Gandhi have heavily criticized the move as “impractical” and costly. Meanwhile, PETA India has even signaled possible legal action.

J.B. Pardiwala biography and age

Jamshed Burjor Pardiwala who is a Parsi is a renowned legal professional who was born on August 12, 1965, in Mumbai. Despite being born in Mumbai, Pardiwala and his family come from South Gujarat’s Valsad district. He was born into a family with a rich legal tradition, as his great-grandfather, Navrojji Bhikaji Pardiwala, also practiced law, followed by his son Cawasji Navrojji Pardiwala, who joined the Valsad Bar in 1929.

Pardiwala’s father, Burjor Cawasji Pardiwala, continued the strong legacy and joined the Valsad Bar in 1955. He also served as a Congress MLA and Speaker of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. Pardiwala is currently 60-years-old, and carries forward the family heritage.

Education

J.B. Pardiwala completed his early schooling at St. Joseph Convent School in Valsad before pursuing his undergraduate degree at J.P. Arts College, Valsad. He then went on to study law at K.M. Mulji College in Valsad, where he earned his LL.B. After graduating, J.B. Pardiwala began his legal practice in January 1989, and enrolled at the Gujarat High Court in Ahmedabad the following year.

Career

J.B. Pardiwala has so far held a distinguished legal career marked by decades of service and high-profile judgments. He began practicing law in 1989, primarily in the Gujarat High Court, focusing on civil, criminal, indirect tax, customs, and central excise cases. He served then as a member of the Bar Council of Gujarat (1994-2000) and was appointed as the Standing Counsel for the Gujarat High Court and subordinate courts in 2002.

During his time there, he notably cleared around 1,200 pending cases, following which he was appointed Additional Judge of the Gujarat High Court on February 17, 2011. Pardiwala then became a permanent judge on January 28, 2013, and also held the position of President of the Gujarat State Judicial Academy. Back in 2015, Pardiwala narrowly avoided impeachment after making controversial remarks on reservations in India.

J.B. Pardiwala has also issued important rulings on public health and environmental issues, such as his 2020 stay on the Ahmedabad Jagannath Rath Yatra during the COVID-19 pandemic, along with the suo moto action on pollution in the Sabarmati River. He was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 9, 2022, and he is slated to serve a two-year term as Chief Justice of India starting in May 2028.
