Carmine Faino identified as main suspect in Pennsylvania state trooper shooting
Authorities have identified Carmine Faino as the man responsible for a violent shooting that left three people dead, including himself, and injured two state troopers Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins in rural northeastern Pennsylvania.
Perechinsky was shot twice, in the chest and torso area while Jenkins was also shot twice, once in each arm.
According to the police, Faino first shot and killed his neighbor, 57-year-old Lori Wasko, before turning his weapon on responding officers. The attack occurred just after 11 a.m. on Thursday, near the small town of Thompson, shocking residents of the quiet Susquehanna County area.
Faino was using a semi-automatic long gun from which he fired several dozen rounds through this incident and prior to the troopers’ arrival, the suspect, Carmine Faino, 61, used a semiautomatic rifle to shoot and kill his neighbor, Laurie Wasko, 57, outside her home.
Despite suffering serious injuries, one of the troopers acted heroically and saved his colleague’s life. Faino was armed with a semiautomatic rifle during the attack, and police shot and killed him at the scene after he refused to comply with commands. Authorities are still continuing their investigations over the actual motive behind the attack. As of now, the exact motive behind his actions remains undisclosed.
Charges and allegations
Since Faino will face no trial due to his death, the allegations placed against him are: first-degree murder for killing Lori Wasko, attempted murder of two Pennsylvania state troopers, and illegal use of a firearm in a violent felony. According to the investigators, Faino used a semiautomatic rifle in the attack.
Official police statements
In response to the incident, Pennsylvania State Police Col. Christopher Paris stated how the troopers were responding to a welfare check before Faino ambushed them. Paris described how the officers were “very lucky to be alive” given the number of bullets that struck their patrol vehicles. Governor Josh Shapiro publicly commended Perechinsky’s bravery, saying:
He acted decisively. He acted thoughtfully. And the work he did today exemplifies the absolute best of the Pennsylvania State Police.”
Authorities have since confirmed that Faino refused to comply with police commands before being fatally shot.
