Sanae Takaichi emerged as the Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP) new leader on October 4 after two previous failed bids back in 2021 and 2024. During the campaign, she softened her ultra-conservative image and branded herself as a “moderate conservative” to widen her support. Now, with her party’s support, she is expected to continue her mentor Shinzo Abe’s legacy and assert her own authority as the new Prime Minister of Japan. Sane will reportedly step in as the first woman to occupy Japan’s highest political office.

Sanae Takaichi is a seasoned politician who was born in Nara Prefecture on March 7, 1961, and grew up in a conservative household. Her father was a factory worker, while her mother served as a police officer. She is currently 64 years old and has built an impressive political career through sheer grit and persistence. She is a ten-term lawmaker and one of Japan’s most experienced politicians.

Political career

Sanae Takaichi first entered politics in 1993 as an independent before joining the LDP in 1995. She went on to hold key ministerial posts in the party, including Internal Affairs, Okinawa Affairs, and Economic Security. Sanae has also chaired the LDP Policy Research Council three times, and she is known for visiting the Yasukuni Shrine despite controversy. Husband and children

Sanae Takaichi married fellow LDP lawmaker Taku Yamamoto in 2004 but divorced in 2017 due to political differences. However, the couple remarried in 2021, and he took her surname after losing his seat in parliament.
