The incident has become one of New York City’s most shocking recent crimes, and detectives reportedly tracked him down after he used the victims’ credit cards.
Jamel went to the home of Frank Olton, 76, and Maureen Olton, 77, on Monday morning asking for a place to charge his mobile phone and left the home about five hours later, carrying a duffel bag and a paper bag.

NYPD officers have arrested a man named Jamel McGriff as the main suspect in the recent killing of an elderly NYC couple. The officers arrested him in Times Square on Wednesday following the murders of Frank and Maureen Olton inside their Queens home on on Monday. According to reports, Jamel tied the husband to a basement pole and stabbed them before setting the house ablaze.
McGriff allegedly spent nearly five hours inside the house before leaving it just as the fire broke out. Police reportedly managed to track his movements after he pawned phones in the Bronx and then used the victims’ credit cards at Macy’s before buying a movie ticket at Regal Cinema. Officers eventually recognized him in Midtown and immediately moved in and arrested him in Times Square.

Authorities have since accused Jamel McGriff of double homicide, arson, and using the victims’ personal property after their deaths. While charges against him are currently pending, his actions have made him the prime suspect.
