Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, who is the wife of former Nepal PM Jhala Nath Khanal, was recently burnt alive to death after a mob set fire to her house during the violent protests led by Gen Z in Kathmandu. As medical officials rushed her to Kirtipur Burn Hospital, she eventually succumbed to her injuries sustained from critical burns after her house in Kathmandu was set on fire by the protestors. Her husband, Khanal, was reportedly not present during the attack. The shocking incident serves as a symbol of Nepal’s growing political crisis amidst financial problems and widespread corruption and unemployment.
Official statements
In response to the escalating violence and tragic death of Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, Nepal’s President Ramchandra Paudel stated:
“I urge all sides to remain calm, prevent further harm to the nation, and come to the table for talks. In a democracy, the demands raised by citizens can be addressed through dialogue and negotiation.”
Several security chiefs of Nepal, including Nepal Army chief Ashok Raj Sigdel, Chief Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal, Home Secretary Gokarna Dawadi, Chief of Armed Police Force Raju Aryal, Inspector General of Police Chandra Kuber Khapung, and Chief of National Investigation Department Hutraj Thapa, issued a joint statement stating:
“As the Prime Minister’s resignation has already been accepted, we call upon all to restrain and not allow further loss of life and property. Dialogue is the only way to restore order and stability.”

The Nepal Army also issued a separate appeal to the younger generation and all citizens to maintain peace stating:
“We are analysing the latest developments of the Gen Z movement and remain committed to safeguarding the people and the country’s integrity.”
