Earlier, reports emerged suggesting that a 21-year-old share-rider was killed, when an armed police vehicle ran into him during the demonstration in the Indonesian capital. These demonstrations were held due to a range of cost-of-living issues.
The protest was to oppose the increase in housing allowance for DPR members, which costs 20 times more than the minimum wage of the majority of Indonesian people as the DPR housing allowance is 3,100 USD while the minimum wage for Indonesian people is only 330 USD.

What Exactly Happened?
On Friday in Jakarta, protests were held and people marched to the headquarters of the mobile police bridge, while many tried to stormed the compound. At the time, the authorities used water canons and opened fire tear gas to push back protestors, who in return threw rocks, and bottles at them.
Reportedly, in central Jakarta near the Kwitang neighbourhood, one group of rioters set a 5-story building on fire, located near a police compound. Meanwhile, some students, who were demonstrating as well, briefly stopped their protest to help soldiers and in rescuing residents, who were trapped inside the building the rioters set on fire.

Multiple cities were witnessing rock throwing demonstrations, including Solo, Surabaya, Makassar, Manado, Medan, Yogyakarta, and Manokwari, alongside the easternmost Papua region. However, the unrest increased after a young rider was killed on Thursday.
He was someone's son, grandson, sibling, cousin, friend.

What Happened to Affan Kurniawan?
As aforesaid, the young bike rider, age 21 Affan was killed after an armored vehicle of the police officials ran into him outside the House of Representatives of Indonesia. At the time, the police officials were dispersing the crowds, who had gathered there to demand lower taxes, higher wages, and the removal of allowance for politicians.
For curious, the young bike rider wasn’t the part of the demonstrator or a part of the riots there, instead he was simply doing his duty of food delivery service and got caught in the clash.
Massive protests are now taking place in Jakarta due to the killing of the Gojek e-hailing motorcyclist, Affan Kurniawan after he was run over and fled from by a Barracuda Armored Vehicle of the Indonesian Republic Police Mobile Brigade Force BRIMOB.
At the time, BRIMOB there was trying to secure the protests that were happening in front of the People’s Representative Council DPR. Affan’s death has sparked outrage among the people because that Barracuda vehicle had already seen it hit Affan but it still hit him and continued its journey.
Gojek motorcyclists held a procession in Jakarta to escort Affan Kurniawan to his final resting place as the Jakarta Police Chief, Asep Edi Suheri, apologized for the death of Affan Kurniawan.
Thousands of Indonesian students gathered at the BRIMOB Headquarters in Jakarta as the Jakarta Police released tear gas to disperse the students.

What Did the Witnesses Reveal?
Witnesses of the horrific incident came forward as they revealed that an armored car of the authorities suddenly sped through the crowd of protestors and hit the bike rider, Affan Kurniawan, causing him to fall onto the ground. They further recounted that instead of stopping the car, the authorities ran over him.
Earlier, in a statement, the Police Chief of the Capital, Asep Edi Suheri, confirmed the incident, while revealing that the food delivery man works for the Gojek and Grab ride-sharing services.
Affan’s mother Erlina said, “I want the person who killed my son to get the harshest sanction by the law… He had just ended a food delivery and was about to pick up his next passenger,” the 41-year-old housemaid said. “He’s the backbone of our family and worked very hard. He had been saving up money from his job to buy land and build a house for us back in our village in Lampung (in South Sumatra).”
