A Ukrainian refugee named Iryna Zarutska was tragically stabbed to death on August 22, 2025, at the East/West Boulevard light rail station in Charlotte’s South End. Authorities revealed that Zrautska suffered multiple stab wounds and died at the scene just before 10 p.m. She had only recently arrived in the U.S., and was fleeing the war back home, seeking a new and safer life.

Main suspect and reason behind the attack
Police have named a 34-year-old man, Decarlos Brown Jr., as the main suspect in Zarutska’s killing. Brown is a known homeless career criminal, and he has an extensive record of arrests stretching back to 2011. He has previously been arrested for robbery with a dangerous weapon and felony larceny, serving five years in prison for armed robbery and faced pending charges for misuse of the 911 system earlier this year. Authorities have now charged him with first-degree murder and will arrest him upon release from hospital treatment for minor injuries sustained during the incident.
Decarlos Brown Jr. is a homeless man who recently went viral after getting arrested for killing a Ukrainian refugee. He is currently 34 years old and he was born and raised in North Carolina. As of now, there is only limited information about his personal life outside his criminal record. Decarlos has notably had a history of instability and criminal behavior, frequently encountering law enforcement with him convicted 14 times previously along with even assaulting his own sister. His recent arrest for murder has now propelled him into a subject of national headlines.
Decarlos Brown Jr has served time in prison, been briefly committed for schizophrenia and was arrested earlier in 2025 after repeatedly calling 911 from a hospital. He has 14 prior cases in Mecklenburg County, including serving five years for robbery with a dangerous weapon and his mother revealed she sought an involuntary psychiatric commitment earlier this year after he became violent at home. Doctors had diagnosed him with schizophrenia.

Iryna Zarutska was a Ukrainian immigrant in the US who tragically passed away after she was knifed to death at a train station. She was just 23 years old at the time of her death and grew up in a country marked by war and instability. Just like many other young Ukrainians, Zrautska had her life disrupted by Russia’s full-scale invasion, forcing her to leave behind the country in the hopes of building a safer life abroad.
