Ryan Michael Bate identified as main suspect in Tremonton police killings
Authorities have named Ryan Michael Bate as the prime suspect in the recent killings of two police officers. The officers were responding to a call regarding Bate assaulting a woman by slamming her head into a doorframe. Despite the whole incident beginning as a domestic violence intervention, it escalated tragically and led to the fatal shootings of two police officers and left a deputy injured. Police immediately arrested Bate at the scene and booked him into the Box Elder County Jail.
Ryan Michael Bate, 32, shot and killed Sgt. Lee Sorensen, 56, and Officer Eric Estrada, 31, during a domestic disturbance response near 700 North and 200 East while Deputy Mike Allred and his service dog, Azula, were injured in the shooting and hospitalized.
Bate, armed with a rifle, was arrested and now faces charges of aggravated murder, attempted murder and assault.
After firing on the officers, bystanders convinced Bate to put down his gun and he was taken into custody by other responding officers and is currently being held without bail.

As of now, prosecutors have yet to file formal charges, but police have recommended felony charges against Bate. The charges include two counts of aggravated murder related to the officers’ deaths. As of now, the case is still pending further legal proceedings as investigators gather more evidence.
Bate got into an argument with an unnamed victim, broke a chair and then grabbed her by the throat making it difficult to breathe. He also threw woman on the coach and the parties’ three minor children were present in the home during the assault.

Prior charges
According to reports, Ryan Michael Bate has a history of prior charges related to domestic violence. Back in 2019, a woman filed a protective order against Bate, and two years later, in 2021, he faced misdemeanor domestic violence assault charges, which eventually got dismissed as part of a plea bargain. Then, in 2024, Bate was arrested on several felony counts, including aggravated assault and three domestic violence offenses involving a child’s presence. Police have documented injuries, including red marks on the victim’s neck from strangulation attempts and a lethality assessment marked Bate as a high risk to his victim.
