Steele is already facing widespread backlash from conservative viewers over his show, with viewers accusing Netflix of pushing a “woke agenda” on children.
Hamish Steele calls Charlie Kirk a ‘Random Nazi’
The controversy erupted when screenshots of Hamish Steele responding to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s post mourning Charlie Kirk’s death went viral. Starmer wrote:
“My thoughts this evening are with the loved ones of Charlie Kirk. It is heartbreaking that a young family has been robbed of a father and a husband. We must all be free to debate openly and freely without fear – there can be no justification for political violence.”
To which Steele responded:
“Why the fk are you even commenting, di**head? Your sympathy for any of the families being affected by your weapons, but a random Nazi gets shot and it’s a public statement. You’re such a f***ing evil shit.”
Backlash from netizens
The comments have sparked intense backlash, with netizens announcing subscription cancellations and calling for boycotts with Elon Musk joining in as well as he cancelled his Netflix subscription. One user commented:

Steele has now responded to this in a post, where he said, “My Instagram comments are now flooded with replies saying I AM CHARLIE KIRK and that I celebrated his death (which I never did) and all I can think of is Yvie Oddley shouting “WHAT HAS THAT GOT TO DO WITH ANYTHING?”

Hamish Steele is a popular animator who was born on 18 October 1990 in Somerset, England. He is currently 34 years old and grew up surrounded by folklore, legends, and ghost stories, which all shaped his creative interests from a very young age. Steele grew up fascinated by myths and animated storytelling and spent much of his childhood drawing comics and developing characters. Steele is openly queer and has often spoken candidly about how his personal experiences influence his work, particularly his focus on LGBTQ+ characters and themes.

Hamish Steele attended Kingston University, where he studied illustration and animation.

Career
Following his graduation, Hamish Steele quickly got into animation and directed Dead End for Frederator Studios, before creating shorts for Nickelodeon. His graphic novel series DeadEndia eventually got adapted as Netflix’s Dead End: Paranormal Park, which earned major awards and critical praise. The show features Barney, who is a transgender teen, and Norma, his best friend, as they navigate life, friendship, and ghostly adventures inside a haunted amusement park.
Steele has also gone on to work with BBC, Disney, Cartoon Network, and Nickelodeon. He has also self-published various comics like Pantheon, and released Go-Man: Champion of Earth, back in 2025.
