Career
David Coote started out his refereeing career in local amateur leagues before advancing to the National League and then eventually the English Football League (EFL). He took charge of his first Premier League match back in April 2018 and quickly joined the Premier League’s Select Group 1 referees. Throughout his career, Coote has officiated several high-profile matches.
Despite his success, Coote was dismissed from the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) back in December 2024. The move came following a video leak showing him making abusive remarks about Liverpool and former manager Jürgen Klopp. That scandal, alongside other further revelations related to alleged drug use and derogatory comments, seemingly damaged his professional reputation. As a result, the Football Association imposed an eight-week suspension in August 2025, and UEFA also banned him from officiating until June 2026.
