Earlier, reports surfaced online indicating that FIDE revokes the grandmaster title of a top Ukrainian chess player, Kirill Shevchenko, who once ranked 75th in the world.

What Exactly Happened?
FIDE in a statement earlier revealed that they had not only revoked Kirill Shevchenko’s grandmaster title, but had also slapped him with a 3-year ban from all FIDE related events and competitions. The International Chess Federation awarded him with the suspension and ban after he was caught cheating during a tournament.
The 22-year-old Chess professional allegedly hid two cellphones in the washroom, with one of them having a note asking the cleaning staff to “not touch,” it. In their statement, the FIDE revealed that the ban will run from October 19, 2024 to October 18, 2026, with one more year as a suspension period, which will take effect until October 18, 2027.

Who is Kirill Shevchenko?
Born in Kyiv, Ukraine on September 22, 2002, as Kirill Serhiyovych Shevchenko, he is a Ukrainian chess player, who in 2023 joined Romania. The player was honored with the title of International Master in 2016, and the title of Grandmaster in 2017, at the age of 14.
The player whose FIDE ranking is 2653 as of September 2025 competed in the Aeroflot Open in February 2018, and finished 51st out of 92 players. A month later, in March 2018, he participated in the European Individual Chess Championship and was placed 32nd.

Let us remind you, it’s not the first time when the Ukrainian-Romanian chess player has become a center of controversy, as previously in October 2024, he was expelled from the Spanish Team Championship after he was accused of cheating using his phone.
Following the incident, he was suspended by FIDE for at 75 days, and even his victory was changed to a loss. In the same year, his chess account was banned for violating the platform’s fair play policy.
