Aside from the medals and glory, players can make some serious money, with over US$8.5 million (AU$12.8 million) in prize money up for grabs.
2025 World Athletics Championships preview
The Japan National Stadium is currently hosting the world’s finest athletes, who are competing for payouts identical to those at the 2023 Budapest edition. The champions in the individual events are set to pocket US$70,000, while relay team winners will split US$80,000 between them. Notably, athletes ranked from first to eighth will go home with a prize amount. Aside from the main prizes, athletes will also have the chance to compete for the US$100,000 bonus rewards that come with setting a new world record.

2025 World Athletics Championships bonus prizes
Besides the main prizes, World Athletics is also set to give out bonus prizes as incentives for top players. Notably, athletes who break a world record in Tokyo will receive US$100,000 (AU$150,000). This means that athletes who win gold and smash a world record could potentially win a staggering US$170,000 (AU$256,000). For context, World Aquatics offers only US$40,000 for world records at their 2025 championships in Singapore. Amongst the athletes, Pole vault star Mondo Duplantis ended up winning with another world record to his name.
