The series has seemingly captivated audiences with its chilling story of cyberbullying that took place in Beal City, Michigan, back in 2020.
The Netflix documentary Unknown Number shows how Lauryn Licari of Beal City, Michigan, and her then boyfriend began receiving cruel text messages from an unknown number urging them to commit suicide when they were aged 13 first in October 2020, then in September 2021.
In December 2022, her mom who used to send her the messages was charged with two counts of stalking a minor, two counts of communicating with another to commit a crime and one count of obstruction of justice.
In April 2023, Kendra Licari was sentenced to a maximum of five years in prison, with a minimum sentence of one year and seven months and was released from prison in 2024.

Notably, Kendra Licari claims that she did not send the initial prank messages but later began texting Lauryn and Owen herself. She hoped to expose the original bully but eventually got caught in a destructive cycle of harassment that she couldn’t escape. Kendra revealed that her childhood trauma, including being raped at age 17, started resurging as Lauryn entered her teens. As a result, this fear of losing her daughter and trying to control Lauryn’s life eventually fuelled Kendra’s cruel behavior. However, she later expressed her deep regret and recognized the harm that she had caused.

Kendra Licari: charges, allegations, and prison sentence
Following her arrest in December 2022, Kendra Licari was charged with two counts of stalking a minor. She pled guilty during the trial and, as a result, received a sentence of 19 months to five years in prison. Kendra served her sentence and eventually got released on August 8, 2024, but still remains under parole supervision while awaiting decisions on future rehabilitation and reconciliation efforts.
