Born in Scarborough, Ontario, on December 19, 2004, Victor Lai is a professional Canadian badminton player. At the BWF World Championships 2025, he emerged as the first player from Canada to bag a medal in any discipline, as he secured a bronze in the men’s singles.

Lai’s family’s background is from Hong Kong, China but details about his parents aren’t known.

Standing at 6 feet 0 inch (1.84), the young player plays badminton as a right handed player. So far, he has recorded 73 wins, 46 losses in his career. As of September 2025, the badminton professional has been ranked no. 50.

As aforesaid, there isn’t much information available about Lai, however, media reports claim that the teenager still goes to college. As earlier, in an interview with media, he can be heard saying “I start school next week.”

As per the official site of Olympics, Victor Lai goes to the York University in Toronto. In an old interview, the player revealed that he is studying as a part-timer as he was heard saying, “I’m part-time,” before adding that he will see how much he can balance between studies and badminton. Multiple reports claim that Victor Lai family’s has Chinese background, as they allegedly hail from Hong Kong.

His medal collection includes gold at the 2025 Pan Am Championships in Lima for men’s singles and team medals at various Pan American competitions. He also claimed victory at the 2025 Pan Am Mixed Team Championships in Aguascalientes and previously won bronze medals at the Pan Am Men’s Team Championships in 2022 and 2024.

He won the gold medal in the boys’ singles at the 2022 Pan Am Junior Badminton Championships in Santo Domingo and also the mixed team gold. His BWF Junior International title came at the 2021 Portuguese Junior International, where he defeated Paul Tournefier 21-13, 21-13.

Victor Lai earlier began, ranked 99th in the world, and after entering the World Championships, he now ranks 50th.
